5 Incredible Reasons to Fall in Love with Ruffles and Frills

Get ready to fall head over heels for ruffles and frills! These flirty and fun details are like the sprinkles on top of a cake, adding that extra bit of sweetness to any outfit. As a designer and dressmaker (and someone who loves fashion), I simply cannot resist the allure of frills! I add romantic waves and playful flounces to my creations as often as possible, as they have the power to make any individual feel like a princess. And who doesn't want to feel like that?

Yet, don't just take my word for it! If you're not already a fan of ruffles and frills, I've got five fantastic reasons why you just may love them too!

5 Incredible Reasons to Fall in Love with Ruffles and Frills

1. They Are A Delicate Feminine Touch

Ruffles have been showcasing femininity for centuries, all the way back to Victorian England! In those times, women wore extravagant dresses embellished with ruffles, ribbons, and lace. They wanted to show off their elegance and add volume to their outfits to enhance their figures.

Today, frills can be a little more understated! Yet, in that way, they bring that girlish charm to our wardrobes. They mimic the delicate curves of the feminine body and allow clothes to drape and flow beautifully. By embracing the ruffle, women everywhere can feel more soft and gentle!

2. They Create a Flattering Silhouette

Frills aren't just for show! Top designers actually use them to add weight and structure to their clothing. Ruffles require extra fabric to create layers, which can make hems a little bit heavier. However, seasoned designers can add even more weight by weaving hem weights strategically into the folds. The balance allows fabrics to drape against the body without any awkward bulges or pulls. The result? Only a stunning silhouette!

That's not all - ruffles also lend a flowing movement to any garment, making it all the more appealing to weavers and onlookers alike. Professional dancers are all in on this secret! They sport ruffled costumes to make their every twist and turn more memorizing. So, if you're looking to add that same graceful movement to your every step, too, be sure to seek out dress with a frilled hem!

3. They Highlight High-End, Luxurious Clothing

Did you know that ruffles can also be a symbol of wealth and status? Historically, those delightful embellishments could only really be purchased by the affluent. Even today, if they are hand-crafted from high-quality materials, they can truly showcase luxuriousness beyond measure. That's because they require a great amount of fabric to produce - sometimes even more than the rest of the garment! As a fashion designer myself, I can tell you a thing or two about ruffles! My silk bow tie dresses require massive amount of fabric for the frills alone; in fact, they take one-third of the entire dress!

And, for my intricate maxi art dresses, the frill fabric is five meters long! Yet, when it comes to hand-selected, hand-painted silk, the price is worth the finished result.

It’s also important to account for the time and skill that goes into creating ruffles. The careful measurements, the delicate folds, the cautious stitching… it all comes together beautifully. You end up with a dress that makes you look and feel like a million bucks!

4. They Provide a Polished Look

A fantastic way to finish off a clothing piece is with frills, flounces, or ruffles. They add a decorative element that elevates any piece beyond the ordinary. It takes it to a level of elegance, sophistication, or refinement. This way, any of your clothing can look incredibly polished.

With some types of prints and patterns, especially with my hand-painted silk fabrics, it is necessary to finish off a hem with something special. Unlike commercially made materials or products, my patterns do not repeat themselves. The art is standalone pictures, like flowers or wildlife, coming together like a one-of-a-kind painting. If I were to simply cut off the imagery, it might look unfinished. With a lovely frill, though, it's much like adding a frame to a precious work of art!

5. They Make Clothing Playful and Whimsical

Clothes don't have to just be practical or functional; they can bring immense joy into our lives! A great place to start is with ruffles! These little frills can transport us to magical places in our imagination - think ballerinas, princesses, and fairies. Plus, the movement of ruffles is truly something spectacular. It can make us feel that much more carefree and happy like we're dancing on air. So go ahead and let loose with some ruffles - your inner child will thank you!
