How to Style Oversized Coats for Women: 5 Effortless and Easy Ways

Cooler weather is starting to drift in… which means I’m starting to picture myself as the star in a Manhattan romcom. You know, that cool, chic girl who just makes fashion look as effortless as the co-star falling in love with her. While I may never be the leading lady in a box office hit, I’m definitely pro-living life as though I am… and it all starts with that it-girl wardrobe. Most importantly, that signature oversized coat!

Oversized coats for women are honestly one of my favorite items. They keep you warm and cozy. They keep that cold wind from hitting you. They pair perfectly with every outfit in your closet. Can it really get any better than that?

Actually, it can! If you know how to style your coat, you’ll be in the ranks with your favorite fashion icons. Hailey Bieber, who? Just you, in your stunning fits!

Here are my top five styling tips for oversized coats to make all those heads turn (maybe even a casting director? Hey, a girl can dream…)

How to Style Oversized Coats for Women: 5 Effortless and Easy Ways

1. Express Yourself

I know neutrals are seemingly the hottest palette on the market right now. I’m of the mind that all those creams and camels may make a great capsule wardrobe. However, when it comes to making a fashion statement, you definitely need stand-out pieces, too. And an oversized coat is a wonderful place to begin!

Colorful oversized coats genuinely make any outfit pop! You’ll stand out from the crowd and showcase your exceptional taste in fashion. After all, it’s high-end designers like Hermès, Balenciaga, and Dolce and Gabbana  who famously use vibrant colors!

Take the opportunity to play with patterns and designs, too! Whether it's bold stripes, delicate florals, or one-of-a-kind tapestries, you can really add interest and intrigue to your outfit with these choices. You’ll have the chance to display your own unique personality with one piece - even if you’re opting for more conservative styles underneath.

2. Go for High-Quality Fabrics

Oversized coats are perfect for chilly days. But, that doesn’t mean you need to suffer in that dreaded transition from the icy outdoors to heated spaces. It’s all about choosing the right fabrics. Avoid polyester completely. Look for silk oversized coats for women - breathable, moisture-wicking, and, most importantly, temperature-regulating! Comfort is a stylish girl’s best friend, after all.

Silk is also going to take your style and multiply it by a hundred. The luxurious look, the spectacular sheen, the exquisite drapery… there’s certainly nothing like it. Take it even further by looking for silk that has been embroidered or painted by hand; you’ll look effortlessly elegant in a one-of-a-kind piece.

3. Experiment with Your Fits

Long and large coats, they’re the best! Why? You don’t have to play by any of the run-of-the-mill fashion rules! Pair an oversized coat for women with equally oversized jeans or dress pants. You’ll be giving, not absolutely serving, a street fashion-forward outfit. Prefer a more sophisticated look? Try fitted pants or skirts to create contrast and dimension.

Oh, the world is certainly your oyster. You can even experiment with colors and patterns! Your colorful oversized coat can be paired with neutrals like you see with the ever-famous Hadid sisters.
Or, you can use one of the colors in the coat as your base color, as seen with Rita Ora or Rihanna.
That’s truly the beauty of statement pieces - the choice is completely yours; either way you will end up absolutely stunning!

4. Accentuate Your Silhouette

Worried about your figure getting lost in an oversized look? Have no fear when it comes to the oversized coat! You can leave the coat open to show off your silhouette and your outfit. Most of your favorite celebrities love this look, and there’s no wonder why!

But there’s also another option! You can really accentuate your waist by pulling it all in with a beautiful belt. The joy of this cinched style is that it looks good on everyone because it creates an ultra-feminine hourglass figure. That’s something that has been sought after for hundreds of years of fashion - just think about the Victorian era and their fascination with corsets!

5. Add Your Accessories

All oversized looks thrive with accessories, especially oversized coat outfits! Long coats for women will extend all the way from your shoulders to your mid-calf, which means you may wish to add a little more structure!

And, it’s incredibly easy to do! You can choose a coat with different colors or patterns, adding dimension and depth naturally. Or, you can add some pretty necklaces, ornate belts, long scarves, or chunky shoes or boots to break up the look. You can even do both for “fresh off the runway” vibes.
